I make cups and plates which have been inspired by Japanese tea bowls – they celebrate the shared heritage of artisan ceramics in Japan and Britain and the continual dialogue between the two distinct cultures. I am especially influenced by Japanese rustic wares - which I admire for their honesty and simplicity.
I work freely with wet slabs of clay making fluid and functional forms, which are fired to stoneware. I work with wax resist techniques and use subtle and voluptuous Japanese glazes, to create tactile surfaces on my pieces.
